“Jennifer Blood #1 was Killer Milf, son! The Big of the Book was definitely
the epic O-face panel on the final page!”

No, the previous sentence does not contain typos. We have simply created new ways to review comics. Listen and learn.

The Comics of Past, Present, and Future.

21 12 2010

If you’re looking for some last minute stocking stuffers for the comic fan in your life, perhaps you’d be interested picking up one of these stories:

1. A dead girl stuck in frozen lake in the 13th century (Northlanders #35)
2. A dead girl in Tokyo who haunts her former lover (The Suicide Forest #1)
3. Four (non dead) girls live in NYC, having boy trouble, school trouble, etc. (The New York Four/Five)

THE PAST:

Becky Cloonan’s interior art for Northlanders #35

Northlanders #35 was, by far, my favorite comic that came out last week. While everyone else was overhyping Charles Soule’s “27” to hell, I was, yet again, blown away by the dynamic duo of Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan. Northlanders #35 is the first part of a two issue storyline entitled “The Girl In The Ice.” If you (or someone you know) has never read Northlanders, don’t fret about starting with issue 35. There’s no silly continuity you need to remember for these timeless tales. Also, you don’t need to be a history major to become fully immersed in these stories. Just pick up this issue and jump right in. You won’t regret it. If you don’t trust me, here’s a quote from someone you should: “Northlanders is probably my favourite book coming out of DC right now.” -Warren Ellis

THE PRESENT:

The Suicide Forest is the most original and intriguing horror comic I’ve read since Locke and Key. This book gets its title from one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in all of Japan and the most famous suicide spot in the world. The writer, El Torres, blends the horrific reality of the environment with traditional Japanese spiritual and supernatural beliefs into the story perfectly. Gabriel Hernandez’s art is filled with earth tones, atmosphere, and an eeriness that you won’t soon forget. If you’re like me and you like your horror fresh and unflinching, take a look into The Suicide Forest.

THE FUTURE:

The New York Four was originally published at Minx Comics in 2008. Sadly, Minx Comics shut down later that year. Thankfully, Vertigo Comics is finally preparing to release the long awaited sequel (The New York Five) in January, and I couldn’t be more excited. This book is also written by Brian Wood with gorgeous art by Ryan Kelly, who’s just starting to get the recognition (The Unwritten #17, Batman 80-page Giant 2010) he deserves.

The New York Four has an ending that demands a follow up… and now it’s finally on the way! Brian Wood has stated that The New York Five “wraps up the Minx book’s storylines, is really dense, and Ryan Kelly’s art has never looked better.” Go pick up the softcover collection of The New York Four at Khepri Comics for only eight bucks and get ready to discover who the “five” is in The New York Five #1 on January 26, 2011.
